How to order bespoke poems

I’d like you to write me a poem - where do I start?

The first thing to do is get in touch with me. You can use the contact form below or send me an email. At this stage all I need is your details, when you need your poem and any message such as whether you need a poem for wedding readings, as a gift or for another occasion as well as who the poem is for.

What happens next?

Once I know I can fulfil your commission I’ll send you a poetry profile. This is the moment to tell me your story. The more details you can give me here, the more va-va-voom your poem will have. I may not include each detail, but everything you tell me helps me build a picure of the people I’m writing about. Often it’s the small silly things that bring a real sense of authenticity and personality to the poem so don’t hold back!

What happens when I return the poetry profile?

I’ll begin work on the first draft of your poem. At this stage I sometimes need a little clarification about what you’ve told me - I’ll email any questions to you so keep an eye on your in-box.

What happens after the first draft is completed?

When the first draft is completed, which usually takes 1-2 weeks, I’ll send it to you to see what you think. At this stage I’m working to get the content spot on so if there’s anything I’ve missed or that you’d like to have more emphasis this is the time to let me know. It may even be that I’ve missed the mark completely - perhaps I’ve made the poem too serious or too light-hearted. If I have just let me know.

Once I’ve had your feedback, I’ll start work on the second draft of your poem. This usually takes about a week and again I’ll send it to you for approval.

and then?

Once we’re both happy with the content I’ll begin to fine tune the poetics - there may be a word that’s not quite doing what I need it to do, or a hiccup in the rhythm that means the poem doesn’t sound as good as it could. This final stage takes another week, after which I’ll send the poem to you for final approval, If there are any final tweaks you’d like this is the time to say!

I’d like my poem illustrated - how can I get this done?

As part of my Rose and Peony poem writing services you can have your poem illustrated. These are superb keepsakes of your day and make a unique gift too. I’ll ask you about what you’d like; some people like a simple flower border, some people like an illustration of key moments in the poem, some ask for something else entirely. I’ll also ask about colours and any particular style you prefer.

How is my bespoke poem delivered?

For my Sweet Pea bespoke poems delivery is by email. I’ll usually send a word document, with a simple font and layout for you to print at home.

Rose and Peony poems are printed on G.F.Smith Munken fine paper and placed in a cardboard mount so they are ready to frame. Poems are sent by Royal Mail Tracked 48 and this cost is included in the price. If you need another type of delivery service I can arrange this for you but there would be an additional charge.

Frequently asked questions

How much notice do you need to write my bespoke poem?

I need a minimum of six weeks notice to write your poem. I’ve written bespoke poems for wedding readings over a year ahead of the big day so don’t feel it’s too soon to ask. Having said that, if I’m in a quiet period I can turn a poem round more quickly so do get in touch if you’ve left it to the last minute. I’ll always do my best to make it happen for you - if it’s not going to be possible I’ll let you know. I never want to take a commission that I can’t fulfil to the highest standard.

How many bespoke poems do you write each month?

The service I deliver is completely bespoke and needs quality time devoted to it. This means I have to limit the number of bespoke poems I write each month. Whilst I hate to say no to a commission, I have to be sure I can offer excellent service to everyone - these are milestone moments! The sooner you get in touch the more chance I have of being able to write for you.

I’m nervous about reading the poem out. Can you help?

As part of my editing process I read the poem aloud to check it sounds good and I’ll amend any parts that don’t flow or sound awkward. To add an extra layer of confidence I offer the option to purchase a recorded reading which many of my clients find invaluable when it comes to the big day.

I send a “readers copy” with every bespoke poetry print, so you can mark where to need to pause or take a breath. Many people find it helpful to write “slow down” in big letters at the top too. The main thing to remember is that you’re reading to people who love you and are thrilled you’re doing this for them. It will all be wonderful.

Can I just get a poem I’ve written printed on nice paper?

You certainly can! This is something I’ve done for several clients with great results. Get in touch with the details and I’ll give you an individual quote.

Do you ask for a deposit?

I ask for a deposit of £30.00 before I begin work on your poem. I’m sorry but I can’t return this once I’ve started to write your poem.

When do I pay the balance?

I will send an invoice for the balance when the poem is complete and sent for delivery.

How do I pay?

Payment is by bank transfer - all the details you need will be on the invoice.

What is your refund policy?

Your poem is completely bespoke which means it is made to your exact specification and because of this I cannot offer a refund.

As part of each service I’ve built in a series of check points which help us to clarify and hone the poem to avoid any misunderstanding or disappointment.

  • I check at at a minimum of three stages in the writing process that it’s all going as expected and am happy to make any amendments as necessary.

  • For illustrations I send several examples of possible designs for you to see and design to your specification.

  • For hand illustrated poems I send a sketch of the proposed illustration for you to approve, before work begins on the final piece.

I know it can feel daunting to ask someone to write something so important and if you’ve any concerns then just drop me an email.
